In 2016, I lost my father.

In this work, I created a series of personal rituals drawing on Jewish traditions of washing the body and mourning. Through these acts, I explore themes of gender and power, but above all, I confront the pain of losing the man who was my dad.

As the only daughter among sons, I became acutely aware of the limited space I felt I could occupy as a woman within traditional Jewish mourning practices. The objects in this work, both concrete and metaphorical, became tools for claiming that space and creating my own rituals of mourning.

The black water, the trimmed hair, the collars and the prostheses became part of a new and personal ceremony, created through my own process of grief and healing, and as a monument to my father.
